LIVING LUXE - DESIGN ISSUE
In a downtown Toronto neighbourhood, a young family has created a home that reflects their love of art and design. Designed in collaboration with Drawing Room Architects, the residence is both strikingly modern and warmly personal—a space where architectural drama, vibrant furnishings, and treasured artworks come together.
At the heart of the home is a sweeping black staircase, its curvaceous form spiraling from the basement to the third floor. Bold and sculptural, the stair provides a dramatic counterpoint to the gallery-white walls, which serve as a canvas for the family’s growing collection of contemporary art. This architectural centerpiece is more than a functional element—it is a design statement that sets the tone for the rest of the house.
Art and custom craftsmanship are woven throughout the interiors. In the front hall gallery, a bespoke sculpture of a panther commands attention, while a lush floral installation suspended above it softens the composition and adds a sense of whimsy. Together, these pieces reflect the family’s desire to celebrate creativity in both traditional and unexpected forms.
Colour, too, is an essential part of the design language. Beyond transforming how the home looks, it shapes how the family feels within it. Saturated tones and vibrant furnishings bring warmth and playfulness, capturing the energy of a young household. Each palette is thoughtfully selected to complement the artwork and architecture, guiding the mood of each room—whether it’s lively and energetic in social spaces or calm and restorative in quieter corners.
The result is a home that is as expressive as it is functional. By layering bold architecture, curated art, and the transformative power of colour, the family has created more than a backdrop for daily life. This house is a living portrait of creativity, joy, and individuality—an enduring testament to how design can elevate not just space, but the experience of home itself.
